Summer 2004 ST109B Project

Your final project is to create three graphic files with the following conditions:

1. Your work will be made with the resolution of 72dpi and size will be 640x480 pixels.
2. You may use CorelDraw or Adobe PhotoShop or any combination of the two, but the final work will be in the jpeg format. (CorelDraw can export to jpeg formats. Adobe PhotoShop can save as jpeg formats. They have the file name extention .jpg)
3. There are four groups below, choose three groups, each group corresponding to the three graphic files you will have to submit.
4. In your three chosen groups, choose only 1 graphic file in each group that you will recreate.
5. All students must have at least one chosen project that your other classmates did not choose. So discuss among each other to avoid this.
6. Graphics must be clear and not pixelated. Thus copying these files and resizing them will not work.
7. You do not have to use the exact same pictures. For example, for the Debate graphic, you could replace the pictures with Rogel and Joanne. As long as you get to copy the concept and recreate it a new graphic file.

If you have any questions about your project of get stuck in a rut and do not know where to start, just talk to me about it so I could give you some pointers or email me.

Lates and Absences

To all my current students,

The past few days I may have been late and sometimes even absent (Was absent twice only, both were ST109B subjects), but I assure you what ever you learn, you are still learning everything 100%.

A common feedback from my students in the past is that they learn a lot more in half the time. I am not boasting about myself that I am good teacher, but I am just hoping for your understanding if ever you have experienced me being late.

The past few months has given me a lot of pressure from work, from my business, from my family, all demanding a large amount of time, when added together, is more than 24 hours. I still try to put everything in a single day and the things I have to do just do not fit in the day and some events get partially sacrificed.

Unfortunately, sometimes it is your class that is partially sacrificed since your time may be lessened, but I assure you that you're not getting the shorter end of the stick. All lessons are still 100% complete.

My job is my job and a job is a job. My job is to teach, but my teaching is not only a job. I am going the extra mile to help you learn more. This website alone is what I am offering to my students and is not a requirement of my job. But this site will be online for many years to come. This site will still serve as your teacher long after you finish your courses. And you could always ask me questions on what you have learned through this website. Just email me and I will surely help you as soon as I can, but I cannot always promise to be on time with my answers, but I'll try my best to help you at the soonest possible time.

Networking Handouts for XP2PC

My students of XP2PC(XPac PC Manager - PC Networks and Troubleshooting), I believe all have handouts on troubleshooting, but there is nothing about networking there. This is old handout content from the main office and is a bit old already. What you will read there is mostly referenced to Windows 95. Anyway most of the content there is still applicable today with all the other versions of Windows, and if ever there is something new, just visit this site often to see if ever there are new things on Troubleshooting or Networking.

As promised (sorry it took so long), the networking handouts will be available online. Writing is not my cup of tea because it feels so time-consuming, but I know you do need this, and I do owe you these handouts so here it is.

*These are Adobe Acrobat Documents, you will need an Acrobat document reader to view the documents. If you do not have an Acrobat document reader, download Adobe ReaderTM by clicking on the link below.

Networking Handouts
O Network Basics
O TCP/IP Basics
O Sharing and Mapping
O Network Neighborhood/My Network Places/Find Computer

Handouts were taken from WindowsNetworking.com. Visit their website for more advanced networking articles.

My Photoshop History & Some Photoshop Tips Websites

When I teach PhotoshopTM*, you get to learn all the basics needed to get you started. Maybe after some number of days practicing Photoshop, you might think you are an expert already, but if you learn a lot more, the more you find out you do not know a lot.

I had my first computer in 1994. It was a 486 DX2 66Mhz. It was running Windows 3.1 and CorelDrawTM* 2.0 and PagemakerTM* 4.0 (which was still made by Aldus then). With CorelDraw and Pagemaker, I though I could do any graphic challenge. Actually all the challenges I got that time, I was able to overcome with whatever tools I had. I bought a GeniusTM* hand-held colored scanner the same year,(Flatbeds were so expensive before, and hand-helds were a lot more cheaper.) and had no knowledge of any photo-editing software. But scanners are always bundled with photo-editing softwares and the one my scanner came with was ZSoft PhotoFinishTM*. It was not the best photo-editing software in the world, but it was able to do all the challenges I met in photo-editing during those days.

My First I.T. job was a graphic artist of Web Philippines, Inc. When I applied they wanted to see some sample work, and I showed them whatever I had. They asked what softwares I used and I said CorelDraw, Pagemaker and PhotoFinish. They ask me why do I use PhotoFinish and not Photoshop? I said, I find PhotoFinish to be a very good photo-editing software. I guess they thought I liked this over Photoshop, but the truth is, I never used Photoshop that time. I started using Photoshop by accident. My computer bugged down and needed to re-install everything and I was chasing a deadline for some website for Web Philippines. My PhotoFinish diskettes (Yes, diskettes, I was using Windows 95 that time, installed using 12 diskettes!) were not working. And a friend of mine, let me borrow his Photoshop 3.0 CD. Feeling disappointed during my installation, I never wanted to use anything else but PhotoFinish because I found it to be a very powerful photo-editing software and never wanted to try something else.

After installing Photoshop, I was back to chasing my deadlines and was a bit irritated in getting used to Photoshop since how to do things were a bit different from PhotoFinish, and I still need to do some learning adjustments that made things harder, considering I was chasing a deadline. But as I started learning Photoshop step by step, I started to like it. The more I used it, the more I liked it. Then I bought a book on Photoshop, and the more I learned, the more I found out that I need to learn more. Up to today, I know I already know so much on Photoshop, that it is way past the knowledge of the average user, but I still think I do not know so many on how to use Photoshop. My hats off to Adobe for creating such a great software that could do so much.

Today, most of my Photoshop learning is through websites, and after learning the basics at Informatics, you could study further through these websites:
O Eyeball Design
The work that made Filipino Ryan Lacdao known worldwide for his excellent Photoshop skills. Even if Photoshop is a raster graphics software, he creates work that some think it was made in a vector graphics software. His website has many lessons in the tutorial section.
Official Website: http://www.eyeball-design.com
O Edgar Tadeo
I first contacted Edgar Tadeo when my old company Action Online Co. Ltd. wanted to outsource a website project and we got him to do it Kenstar Travel. I don't know if that website is still alive ever since the website was transferred to Viaje's servers hosted on Compass Internet. Well going back to Edgar, he is a ink and coloring man for Marvel and Image comics. He has worked on projects like X-MenTM* and Silver SurferTM*. His website has a basic tutorial on coloring your comic drawings, or anime and manga drawings.
Official Website: http://www.edgartadeo.com
O Good Tutorials
I'd like to thank Amor Lopez for discovering this site. Various people contribute to this site sharing what they know, sharing it to everyone. A good site with many Adobe Photoshop tutorials.
Official Website: http://www.good-tutorials.com
O Graphic Expo
If you want to be a serious graphic artist, this once a year event, is one of the best to attend. It has a series of seminars every year, and this is where I learned a lot of the technical stuff you need to know on being a graphic artist.
Official Website: http://www.graphicexpo.com.ph
O Philweavers
Philweavers is one group of Filipino Webmasters. Since in website designing, there is a heavy use of graphic softwares, there are many Photoshop users in this organization and a lot are sharing their knowledge on the mailing list. They also hold some workshops from time to time.
Official Website: http://www.philweavers.net

If you have any Photoshop questions, you could email me anytime, but if I do not reply right away, I just might be busy, so please do not always expect an immediate reply. But as much as possible I will try to answer all your Photoshop inquiries.

Still Using Pirated Software? Think Again...

Software piracy is all over the Philippines. Just go to a CD store and you could find a pirated cd software dealer somewhere. Although the law against piracy seems to be beefing up with more strict policies and raids here and there, they seem to be targeting more of the video and music cd piracy. Software piracy has been targeted mainly in big companies only, through the BSA with the help of the NBI.

Now most people, what they do if even they copy softwares by one way or another, downloaded from the net, copied a whole CD and if serial numbers are required to install them, people seem to know how to get around these things and still find a way to get through these registration numbers. They mainly do it by any of the following ways:

1. Search the Internet for valid serial numbers. Sometimes on the Internet this is called Serialz.

2. Look for the appropriate Keygen, sometimes called Keygenz that are key generators. The makers of these keygens are so smart (or they came from the manufacturer of the software themselves and knows the trade secret.), they figured out the algorithm behind the serial numbers and just by entering a few parameters like your name, current date, or registration number, the corresponding correct serial number is generated for you.

3. Using Cracks, also called Crackz (I do not know what is it with the letter 'z' that the piracy world seems to like.), modifies a program so that it will no longer look for serial numbers, or will no longer expire if ever that is the case like in evaluation periods of some softwares.

If ever someone decides to download the whole software package, they call this 'Warez'. And there has been Wares sites that also include the downloads of Serialz, Crackz and Keygenz, along with some banner ads leading to pornographics websites, sex and body enhancement products, online dating and online casinos.

Last month, the U.S. Department of Justice has announced a massive antipiracy sweep of at least 120 locations worldwide, including 80 US-Based searches in 27 states. The FBI, coordinating with law enforcement in at least 10 foreign countries, has seized computers and servers said to be holding at least $50 million worth of illegally pirated material. So if you think you are in the Philippines and is far from being caught by US Authorities, you better think twice.

The US Justice Department dubbed the operation against piracy Operation Fastlink. In this operation, agents have raided various locations in the United States, while other raids were conducted in Singapore, Israel, and European countries including Great Britain, Belgium, Denmark, France, and Germany.

The operation resulted in the seizure of 200 computers, including more than "30 computer servers" that are said to have been functioning as storage and distribution hubs for pirated materials. These pirated materials include movies, music, and computer programs.

Operation Fastlink identified nearly 100 individuals worldwide who are allegedly involved in illegal online piracy. Attorney General John Ashcroft remarked after the raids that many of the individuals are leaders and/or high-level members of some of the most well-known international "warez" release groups, with names including Fairlight, Kalisto, Echelon, Class, and Project X, all of which specialize in pirating computer games.

According to the US Department of Justice, the department has increased its number of Computer Hacking and Intellectual Property, or CHIP units, from one to 13 in the last three years. This growth, the DOJ says, will undoubtedly result in many more searches and seizures in the world of international pirating syndicates.

So if you plan to download a crack somewhere, that site may be gone tomorrow. If you have a hosting server, better not place any warez, serialz, keygenz and crackz there and delete them for good. Do the same on personal web servers on broadband connections like DSL, Cable and satellite connections running IIS, PWS, Apache or any other webserver. You might be serving the world some software piracy. P2P(Peer-to-Peer) programs like the famous Kazaa are also not exempted.

If you want to be safe, buy your software or use OpenSource softwares (Check the Opensource Initiative website.)!

Spybot Update Not Working?

To my first batch of PC Networks and Troubleshooting, if you have been using Spybot the past few days and tried updating it, and it says no updates are available. Then after doing this after a long time you still get the same message, your Spybot version might be an old version. The ones first distributed on the CDs I burned were version 1.2. The latest is 1.3. I found this out after running spybot on different computer units and some were scanning and searching for spyware in a database of 12,000+ known spywares. In some computers, it was only searching in a database of 5,000+ known spywares. So I tried updating the one that only knows 5,000+ spywares and noticed it could not update itself. I then decided to visit their website and found out that version 1.3 has just came out.

I installed version 1.3 and noticed the following:

1. The new version has a registry backup feature, so if ever Spybot messes up your registry, you could restore it to it's previous state.

2. It uses the new system restore of Windows XP and 2000. Spybot creates restore points before doing that could also be potentially bad for Windows. So it could use system restore in the future just in case you need it.

3. It now has a real-time scanner installed.

4. Even software usage logs could be detected and erased.

5. Has support for Opera and Mozilla Browsers.

Generally, Spybot just seemed to get a lot more smarter! Try it out. Go to the Security-Related Software Downloads, or simply click here.

Security-Related Software Downloads

In PC Networks and Troubleshooting, I always ask my students to submit a blank CD and I will copy on them softwares that I commonly use in the subject PC networks and troubleshooting.

I update the contents of the CD a bit often, so if you are an old student, the software I gave you may no longer be updated. But as long as you visit this website, I will keep you updated with the softwares I use. And here are direct downloads for some of the security-related softwares that I copy on the CD.

Security-Related Software Downloads

O AVG Anti-Virus Software
A free anti-virus software that could be updated. Works as well as the popular McAfee and Norton Anti-Virus Softwares.
Official Website: http://www.grisoft.com
O Ad-Aware
The main anti-spyware software I use. This is freeware and comes with free updates as well.
Official Website: http://www.lavasoftusa.com
O Spybot
There are just some spywares that Ad-Aware cannot see. And there are also spywares that Spybot can see and Ad-Aware cannot. Thus it is best to have both Ad-Aware and Spybot installed on your computer. Has free updates too.
Official Website: http://www.safer-networking.org
O SpywareBlaster
Ad-Aware and Spybot can detect and remove spyware, but SpywareBlaster keeps them from coming in. Something that both Ad-Aware and Spybot cannot do. So it is also good to install this on your system. This does not only support Microsoft Internet Explorer, but Netscape Navigator, Opera and Mozilla browsers as well. Also has free updates.
Official Website: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com
O LANGuard Network Security Scanner
This software scans your computer for all security threats. It gives proper recommendations and all supporting documentation links on the web. You will first download the evaluation copy and once it expires it will become freeware (if not purchased) and will limit it's capabilities, but is still good enough to help you in many network security issues.
Official Website: http://www.gfi.com
O DComBobulator
Running DCom on your system gives you the potential threat of being hacked using the same system used in the remote desktop feature of Windows XP. If you do not use the remote desktop, I suggest turn off DCom and use DComBobulator.
Official Website: http://www.grc.com
O Shoot the Messenger
Running MSN Messenger, now called Windows Messenger on your system gives you the potential threat of being hacked. If you do not use windows messenger (I do, so I do not use "Shoot the Messenger"), I suggest turn off Windows Messenger that runs by default. If you use Windows Messenger like me, do not worry that much as long as you have SpywareBlaster, Spybot and Ad-Aware on it, you should be safe.
Official Website: http://www.grc.com
O UnPlug n' Pray
Microsoft came out with the Universal Plug n' Play, a good idea, but also a good gateway to hackers. Again, if you are not using it, disable it. And use this to disable it.
Official Website: http://www.grc.com
O XPDite
One vulnerability of Windows XP, is that using simple JavaScript code, you can delete hard disk files of the visitor of the website. Although if you update your windows often at the Windows Update site, you should have no problem. The Service Pack 1 (SP1) should take care of this. This is also an equivalent patch for SP1 and it first came out before SP1 did. Anyway, I do suggest to download SP1 from Microsoft instead for Windows XP users.
Official Website: http://www.grc.com
O SpamPal
Still annoyed by spammers? Height increase, waistline decrease, breast size increase, penis lengthener, Nigerian scam, Viagra, Xanax, HGH, pharmacies, multi-level marketing, network marketing, networking, get rich with eBay, search engine ranking, porn, online dating, voyeur cameras, spamlist for sale. SpamPal segregates them all! SpamPal is smart enough to distinguish spam from not spam using it's large database of IP addresses of spammers, and in my case, it is about 90% of the time accurate. There is some 10% error here and there, but could be corrected manually if ever this occurs. This only works with those who use POP3 email softwares like Eudora, Outlook, Outlook Express, etc.
Official Website: http://www.spampal.org

If ever you think I mentioned some software in class that I didn't place any link on this website, email me about so I could include this on the site. If ever you find any other software with the same purpose and is better than what I recommend, why not share it too. I am sharing this information to you, so why not share your information to me too!

Student Work Downloads

Some of you students have some work saved in the computers and I saved them since you wanted copies of your work. They are available for downloading, but they will not be here forever since it does consume some about of server space. And I cannot promise up to when I could hold these files, but what I will do is if ever I need to delete some of them. I delete the old ones first, before the new ones.
